I've been thinking...
I was looking through the blogs and saw gmu2003's post about Freud and it reminded me about this discussion I was having with one of my friends about homosexuality. We read this article in the paper about how the discussion about the origins of being gay is still a major contraversy. Many believe that homosexuality has genetic orgins while others believe it is merely a choice. This also got me to start thinking about whether or not my own sexuality was driven by merely my genetics or perhaps it was taught to me by my environment or perhaps even a choice made early on with curiosity. While I know that I'll never be able to answer this question for anyone else, I believe that my own sexuality and sexual preferences developed as a combination of all three of these factors.
I don't believe that Freud had all the answers, especially since he didn't come to his conclusions via purely scientific means (he used studies of ancient texts along with mainly case studies of children and individuals in wards housing individuals found "undesireable" in society). I do believe however that he took his own experiences and feelings along with his understanding of identity construction with the individual and society and attempted turn the conversation about human sexuality origins in a new direction and for that atleast I respect his work.
