Last Class and Thoughts
Last class we had an interesting activity where we formed groups and went around the room listing as many derogatory terms for sexual/sexual orientation words that we could on boards. After each group had been all the way around the room, we examined the boards and even though i had not heard of some of the terms that were listed, none of them really surprised me. Derogatory or inappropriate terms tend to be used out of not necessarily ignorance but because of the popularity of them. Slang reflects growth within language. I am not condoning the use of terms that can be considered as offensive to specific groups of people, I am just stating the fact that slang is only used because it is often more common than the proper terms.
Aside from the activity, we went into an extensive discussion on female anatomy. After reading the chapter and the chapter for the class coming up, I think its mind boggling just how complex our bodies really are. I like how the book goes into social issues as well, somewhat like a psychology class. For example, the way it discusses sexual activity and menstration, which is a rampant topic with many people who are sexuality active. I think its interesting how the menstral period has had spiritual meaning in many cultures throughout history and how even today, without knowing, people all over the world respect the spirituality of the period and abstain from sexual activity while it goes on.
