In reference to Grey's Anatomy

I have seen that episode various times as well where Derek and Addison's friends come for surgery. I am at high risk for breast, ovarian, uteran, and cervical cancer, however I refuse to have any surgery until it is necessary. I already have had signs of precancerous cells, however I take it one day at a time because the scary part may not happen for a while. With all of the advances in medicine, there is a high chance of living through these cancers. The woman who chose to have everything removed, had it all removed so she did not have to deal with the possibility. I agree with Izzie in the episode, keep your organs, possibly get cancer, and if you FIGHT LIKE HELL to SURVIVE. Life is pretty short to make such drastic changes just for "what ifs", in my personal opinion.

One thing that is very important, which many woman in college do not realize, is prevention. Many women do not feel it is necessary for regular examination and monitoring of their body at this age because they are still young. There is a stigma that you don't qualify, if you will, unti you're in your 30s and 40s. It's NOT TRUE. Start self-breast exams NOW and annual pelvic exams NOW. It may save your life and it's a good habit to start. :-)
